Turkish Lira (₺)

Istanbul splits across two continents and two payment styles. Cafés, restaurants and malls take cards without a second thought, while the bazaars, the ferry-side snack sellers and the small neighbourhood shops still reward people holding cash. Add a lira that loses value quickly, and the key skill is knowing how much to hold at any one time.

How much cash to bring to Istanbul

A rough daily budget for a comfortable mid-range trip. Prices in lira change quickly, so treat these as a starting point and check before you go.

  • Food — ₺1,200–3,000/day (simit and street snacks are cheap; a seafood dinner by the Bosphorus is not)
  • Local transport — ₺300–600/day on trams, metro and ferries
  • Attractions & shopping — ₺500–2,000/day (the big sites charge foreigners much more than locals)

Our rule of thumb

For 4 days in Istanbul, carry around ₺6,000–10,000 in cash and keep a card for restaurants and hotels. At today's rate that's roughly RM520–870.

Paying your way around Istanbul

  • Get an Istanbulkart — it covers the metro, tram, funicular, Marmaray, buses and ferries, and it is cheaper per ride than buying single tokens or tickets. Buy one at the machines in stations and ferry terminals, then top it up with cash or card.
  • Hold less lira, more often — the lira has been losing value against stronger currencies, so avoid converting everything on day one. A modest cash float plus a card covers most days.
  • Cards are widely accepted — hotels, restaurants, malls and chain cafés take Visa and Mastercard. If a terminal offers to charge you in ringgit or dollars, choose lira.
  • Taxis — insist on the meter, or use a ride-hailing app. Some drivers claim the meter is broken; politely get out and find another.

Neighbourhood cash notes

  • Grand Bazaar & Spice Bazaar — most shops will take cards, but cash tends to secure the best price when you haggle. Start at about half the first price and settle in the middle.
  • Sultanahmet — restaurants near the major sites take cards, but they cost more. Walk a few streets away for cheaper meals.
  • Karaköy & Galata — trendy cafés and bars are card-friendly; the small bakeries and baklava shops often prefer cash.
  • Ferry piers (Eminönü, Kadıköy) — simit sellers, fish sandwiches and tea stalls are cash territory. Carry small notes.

A couple of Istanbul habits

  • Tipping is welcome — many restaurants round up or add about 10% to the bill. Check whether service is already included before you add more.
  • Be wary of overly friendly strangers — a persuasive invitation to a bar or carpet shop near the main sights is a common tourist trap. Politely decline and keep moving.
