Vietnamese Dong (₫)

Da Nang is Vietnam's most relaxed big city — long beaches, the Dragon Bridge, and the lantern-lit old town of Hoi An just half an hour south. Resorts and cafés take cards, but Hoi An's market, tailors and street food run on dong, so plan your cash around the day trip.

How much cash to bring to Da Nang

A rough daily budget for a comfortable mid-range trip:

  • Food — ₫200,000–450,000/day (mi quang and banh mi are cheap; beachfront dining costs more)
  • Local transport — ₫80,000–250,000/day on Grab, plus the Da Nang–Hoi An run
  • Beaches & sights — ₫150,000–500,000/day (Marble Mountains, Ba Na Hills, a Hoi An boat)

Our rule of thumb

For 3 days around Da Nang and Hoi An, carry around ₫2,000,000–3,500,000 in cash — and set aside extra if you plan to have clothes tailored in Hoi An. At today's rate that's roughly RM340–600.

Paying your way around Da Nang

  • Grab covers the city and Hoi An — bikes for short hops, a car for the ~30 km run down to Hoi An; scooters are easy to rent (cash).
  • Cards at resorts and cafés — Da Nang's beachfront hotels and trendier cafés take them; the further you get from the beach strip, the more it's cash.
  • Hoi An is cash country — the ancient town's market, food stalls and lantern sellers don't take cards.
  • Budget for tailoring — Hoi An's famous tailors want cash; agree the price up front and bargain politely.

Neighbourhood cash notes

  • My Khe Beach (Da Nang) — resorts and cafés take cards; beach vendors are cash.
  • Dragon Bridge & riverside — night markets and street food, cash.
  • Hoi An Ancient Town — entry ticket, market, tailors and lantern boats all cash.
  • Ba Na Hills / Golden Bridge — buy tickets online or by card; spending inside is mixed.

One Da Nang habit

  • Carry your Hoi An cash separately — tailoring and market spending there is cash-only and adds up fast, so don't get caught short on the day trip. Tipping isn't expected anywhere here.
