Madinah is the calmer half of most umrah itineraries. Hotels sit a short walk from the Prophet's Mosque, the pace is gentler than Makkah, and the shopping leans towards dates and everyday gifts instead of high-rise malls. Most visitors spend less here than in Makkah, so pack your budget accordingly.

How much cash to bring to Madinah

A rough daily budget for the extras on top of an umrah package:

  • Food — SR 50–120/day (local restaurants and bakeries are cheap; hotel dining costs more)
  • Local transport — SR 20–80/day (most people walk around the mosque; taxis cover Quba, Uhud and the station)
  • Shopping & gifts — SR 50–150/day, mostly dates, nuts and small souvenirs

Our rule of thumb

For 4 days in Madinah, carry around SR 800–1,500 in cash for extras and keep a card as backup. At today's rate that's roughly RM900–1,650.

Paying your way around Madinah

  • Walk first — hotels around the Prophet's Mosque are within walking distance, so you may use taxis less than in Makkah.
  • Taxis for the ziarah sites — Quba Mosque, Uhud and the other sites are best reached by taxi or a group trip. Agree the price first, or use a ride-hailing app.
  • Cards work in malls and hotels — Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted, but market stalls and small shops often prefer cash.
  • Haramain train — the high-speed railway links Madinah with Makkah. The station is outside the old centre, so factor in a taxi to get there.

Neighbourhood cash notes

  • Around the Prophet's Mosque — the shops and malls in the hotel district take cards, but the smaller stalls selling prayer items and snacks are cash-friendly.
  • Dates shops and markets — Madinah is famous for dates, especially Ajwa. Many shops take cards, but market vendors sometimes give a better price for cash.
  • Quba and Uhud areas — small vendors and cafés near the sites are usually cash only.
  • Local bakeries and restaurants — good for cheap meals, and many of the smaller ones prefer cash.

A couple of Madinah habits

  • Compare before you buy dates — prices vary by grade and shop, so look at a few before filling your suitcase. Ask for a small taste and check the packing date.
  • Carry small notes — for taxis, tips and donation boxes. Large notes are harder to break at small stalls.
