Most Malaysians in Makkah are on an umrah package, which usually covers flights, hotel and some meals. That makes this a different kind of budget: not "how much will my trip cost?" but "how much do I need for everything the package doesn't include?" Think food outside the hotel, taxis, gifts for family and a little set aside for charity.

How much cash to bring to Makkah

A rough daily budget for the extras on top of an umrah package:

  • Food — SR 60–150/day (a hotel buffet may already be covered; Pakistani, Indonesian and Arab restaurants near the Haram are good value)
  • Local transport — SR 20–100/day (short taxi hops, or Uber and Careem-style apps for longer trips)
  • Shopping & gifts — SR 50–200/day (prayer items, perfume, dates, Arabic sweets, clothing)

Our rule of thumb

For a 7-day umrah, carry around SR 1,500–2,500 in cash for extras and keep a card for bigger purchases. At today's rate that's roughly RM1,600–2,700.

Paying your way around Makkah

  • Cards are widely accepted — Saudi Arabia has a strong card and contactless culture, so Visa and Mastercard work at most hotels, malls and chain restaurants.
  • Cash is still useful — for small stalls, street-side vendors, tipping and charity, it's quicker than a card machine.
  • Taxis and ride-hailing — agree the fare before you get in a street taxi, or use a ride-hailing app so the price is fixed upfront.
  • Haramain high-speed train — if you are continuing to Madinah, the train is an easy way to travel. Fares vary by date and class, so check the official booking site rather than trusting an old price.
  • ATMs — available around the hotel zone, but your bank and the ATM operator may both charge fees on foreign cards, so withdraw less often.

Neighbourhood cash notes

  • Around Masjid al-Haram — the shopping malls attached to the hotel towers, including Abraj Al Bait, take cards. The small stalls and street vendors nearby are happier with cash.
  • Souvenir shops — prayer mats, tasbih, abayas and perfumes are all bargainable. Cash and a friendly smile usually get you a better price than a card.
  • Dates and sweets — the shops that sell dates, Arabic sweets and nuts often take cards, but a small cash float is handy for gifts.
  • Hotel zone eateries — most restaurants accept cards; tiny bakeries and juice stalls may not.

A couple of Makkah habits

  • Keep small notes — SR 5, 10 and 20 notes are useful for taxis, tips and charity boxes, where change can be hard to find.
  • Check your total before paying — in busy shops near the Haram, confirm the price and the currency on the card machine so you only pay once and in riyals.
