Everything a Malaysian traveller needs to know about the Japanese Yen — how much to bring, when to exchange, and where to get the best rate in KL.
Japan is one of the few developed countries where cash is still king — especially outside big cities. Here's how to get the most yen for your ringgit, and how much to actually carry.
When to exchange
The yen has been historically weak against the ringgit through 2025–26, which is good news for Malaysian travellers. Rates move daily, so it pays to watch the trend rather than exchange the moment you book.
Tip: KL changers tend to post their sharpest JPY spreads mid-week. Avoid exchanging on weekends when rates are frozen at Friday's close.
How much cash to bring
A rough daily budget for a comfortable mid-range trip:
- Food — ¥3,000–6,000/day (convenience stores are cheap and excellent)
- Local transport — ¥800–1,500/day with an IC card
- Attractions — ¥2,000–4,000/day
Our rule of thumb
For a 7-day trip, bring around ¥80,000–120,000 in cash and keep a card as backup. At today's rate that's roughly RM2,000–3,000.

Payment tips on the ground
- Carry cash for small shops, shrines & rural areas — many don't take cards.
- 7-Eleven ATMs accept foreign cards if you run low — but fees add up.
- IC cards (Suica/PASMO) work for trains, buses and most convenience stores.
- Avoid airport exchange counters — their spreads are far worse than KL changers.
