How to avoid money exchange scams in KL

6 分钟阅读·更新于 2026-06-01·KL Rates 编辑团队

The vast majority of KL money changers are legitimate, licensed businesses. But a few bad actors rely on travellers being rushed and unfamiliar. Here are five red flags — and the simple habits that keep your cash safe.

1. No visible licence

Every legitimate money changer in Malaysia is licensed by Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) and must display that licence. No licence on the wall, no deal. Stick to established shops inside malls and on recognised exchange streets rather than a folding table on the pavement.

2. A rate that's too good to be true

If one shop's rate is dramatically better than everyone nearby, be careful. It's often bait — the headline number gets you to the counter, then "that rate is for larger amounts only," or the final count quietly differs. Knowing the going rate before you arrive makes bait obvious.

Your best defence

Know the live market rate before you walk in. When you already know roughly what RM1,000 should get you, a padded or bait rate stands out instantly.

3. Rushing and distraction at the counter

Scams thrive on pressure — a queue forming, chit-chat, a phone shoved in your face. Slow down. Count every note yourself, in front of the teller, before you leave the counter. Don't pocket the cash until you've finished counting.

4. No receipt

A legitimate changer will issue a receipt showing the amount, currency, rate and total. If they're reluctant to give one, walk away — the receipt is your proof if the count is wrong.

5. "Limited stock" pressure

"Only a little left, decide now" is a classic nudge to stop you comparing. Real stock limits do exist, but they shouldn't come with pressure. If you're being rushed into a decision, that's your cue to check another shop.

Two minutes of comparing and counting is the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy on a currency exchange.
