Thailand is one of the easiest places in the region for Malaysians to travel — but street food, markets and tuk-tuks all run on cash. Here's how to get the most baht for your ringgit, and how much to actually carry.
When to exchange
The baht trades closely with the ringgit, so day-to-day swings are small — but spreads between KL changers can still cost you a few baht per ringgit. It pays to compare rather than exchange at the first counter you see.
Tip: Avoid changing money at Thai airports and tourist-strip booths in Bangkok or Phuket — their rates are noticeably worse than what you'll get in KL before you fly.
How much cash to bring
A rough daily budget for a comfortable mid-range trip:
- Food — ฿300–700/day (street food and local restaurants are excellent value)
- Local transport — ฿100–300/day with BTS, taxis and tuk-tuks
- Attractions — ฿200–600/day
Our rule of thumb
For a 7-day trip, bring around ฿8,000–14,000 in cash and keep a card as backup. At today's rate that's roughly RM1,000–1,800.

- Carry cash for street food, markets & tuk-tuks — most don't take cards.
- Cards & contactless work in malls, hotels and bigger restaurants.
- ATMs charge a flat ฿220 foreign-card fee per withdrawal — take out larger amounts less often if you run low.
