Everything a Malaysian traveller needs to know about the Australian Dollar — how much to bring, when to exchange, and where to get the best rate in KL.
Australia is an easy country to spend in — contactless cards and phones work almost everywhere, and plenty of cafés and shops have gone card-only. It's also pricey, and the AUD is one of the best-stocked currencies in KL, so the rate you lock in before you fly genuinely matters.
When to exchange
The Australian dollar moves with commodity prices and global sentiment, so it can drift a fair bit against the ringgit over a few weeks. It's a major currency that KL changers carry in depth with competitive spreads — watch the trend and exchange on a dip rather than the day you book.
Tip: Because Australia is so card-friendly, don't over-exchange. A modest amount of cash plus a card you're happy to tap is all most travellers need.
How much cash to bring
A rough daily budget for a comfortable mid-range trip:
- Food — A$40–80/day (a casual meal is A$20–35; coffee A$4–5)
- Local transport — A$8–18/day (contactless bank cards tap straight onto most city networks)
- Attractions — A$20–60/day

For a week, carry around A$150–250 in cash as backup and put the rest on a card. At today's rate that's roughly RM450–750.

Payment tips on the ground
- Tap everywhere — cards and mobile wallets are accepted at nearly every shop, café and transport gate.
- Transit cards are optional — in Sydney, Melbourne and more, a contactless bank card works directly without buying an Opal or Myki.
- Claim the GST back — the Tourist Refund Scheme lets you reclaim the 10% GST on eligible goods at the airport when you leave; keep your receipts.
- Don't tip out of habit — it isn't expected, though rounding up for great service is welcome.
